Roosevelt Island, formerly known as Welfare Island, is a narrow island on the East River of New York City. Running from Manhattan's East 46th to East 85th streets, the island is approximately two miles long. According to a 2000 census the island had a population of 9,520. The small lighthouse stands at the northern tip of Roosevelt Island.
